When measuring your castor, make sure you are not using the same method every time! There is a good chance that you have used yours before so we will go over some differences.

The first thing to remember when checking your castors is that there should be no movement of the board or vehicle while you measure it. This could potentially change how heavy duty your castors are as you may find that they are not strong enough for use.

We recommend using a ruler as your main measurement tool. Hold one end of the handle firmly while moving the wheel back and forth to determine how much it wobbles or moves in response to force. This is our preferred way to measure caster because it does not require anything other than a good grip on the handle and movement with pressure.

You can also use a level to verify vertical alignment. Make sure that when the front wheels are perpendicular to the floor, there is no tilt forward or backward. If there is, add more roll-bar strength or reduce the amount of caster in the vehicle.

The next step in measuring your casters is calculating how much offset you need to make. This is done by finding the difference between two parallel lines that are created when drawing a circle around the caster.

One of these lines must be at a constant depth, while the other can be adjusted up or down depending on whether the caster needs to move up or down to rotate easier.

The line with which we will create our parallel lines is one that is perpendicular to both the frame and the floor. We will use this as our base for our calculations since it does not change no matter what angle the leg makes. (Note: Make sure to measure from the center of each bolt hole- not just where the bolts go!)

Once this line has been found, we can now find the difference in length between the top and bottom of the frame. This is our needed adjustment! To determine how many degrees up or down we should push the caster, simply add the amount of inches to your calculation. For example, if the needed adjustment was six inches then roll the caster six additional inches away from the frame.

This process must be repeated for all four casters so that they all have equal amounts of movement.
